Do it anyway

The Final Analysis

People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered;
…Forgive them anyway!
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives;
…Be kind anyway!
If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies;
…Succeed anyway!
If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you;
…Be honest and frank anyway!
What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight;
…Build anyway!
If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous;
…Be happy anyway!
The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow;
…Do good anyway!
Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough;
…Give the world the best you’ve got anyway!
You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God;
It was never between you and them anyway.

—  Mother Teresa

 A guy I work with gave me this quote. Honestly, it sat in my car for about two weeks before I read it.  Then, when I needed it most, I found it stuffed in the center console. Not only did I need to hear it’s message, I was reminded that I ALWAYS get what I need EXACTLY when I need it..

   I agree with the quote above. I always tell my clients that they should be do the right thing despite any resistance they may meet from doing it. I tell them that they can go to bed at night knowing that they did what they needed to do for them, not someone else.

Recently I have been struggling with trying to find the balance between doing things for the sake of doing them and not allowing people to take advantage of my good nature. The balance comes from me being able to communicate my feelings, to be able to say “Hey, I bought coffee last time, you get it this time.” Sometimes it’s difficult to ask for what I need and sometimes I get no for an answer. When I do get no for an answer, am I not going to do the right thing because someone else won’t do it for me? No, I’m going to do the right thing. It was never between  me and them anyway.

It’s such a crazy hard balance to strike, isn’t it? Work in progress.

It IS a work in progress, and it ALWAYS is. Some days seem easier than others, but it’s never a given.
